A Greek shipping company that has been accused of operating a vessel that spilled thousands of litres of fuel into English Bay, Vancouver, is to be prosecuted, whether it participates in the legal proceedings, or not, according to the Canadian Press.
The decision; which was filed Friday in British Columbia’s provincial court, says it is “abundantly clear” that Alassia NewShips Management Inc. knew it faced 10 pollution-related offences.
The charges came after the investigation by Transport Canada into the MV Marathassa, which leaked 2,700 litres of bunker fuel in April 2015.
Alassia argued that they were not properly informed about the proceedings, but in her written decision, Judge Kathryn Denhoff says that the summons was successfully delivered on two different occasions.
The company’s lawyer and the captain of another vessel that is operated by Alassia, were both served, says Judge Denhoff.
The trial against the firm; Alassia, and the Marathassa is scheduled to begin on Feb. 26.
