Montreal’s Greek Orthodox Church ‘Koimisis tis Theotokou’ Destroyed by Fire

Fire destroys Koimisis tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church in Montreal

A fire that broke out on Monday evening destroyed the ‘Koimisis tis Theotokou’ Greek Orthodox Church located in the Park Ex area at the corner of de l’Epee and St-Roch in Montreal.

The church was built in 1962, at a building that was property of the Apostolic Church of Canada before 1968, when it was purchased by the Greeks and transformed into a Greek Orthodox Church.

“To see the church destroyed like this is terrible…People are truly in mourning,” told CBC news Nicholas Pagonis, president of The Hellenic Community of Greater Montreal.

“This is catastrophic. I’m in shock.”

Montrealer Domenico Ferrara shot and posted on You Tube a video from the scene. The video shows flames bursting out of ‘Panayitsa’ as Greeks used to refer to the church, while stained glass windows can be heard shattering, as onlookers yell and cry.
