Canadian Prime Minister Congratulates Greek Publishers

Congratulatory letter from the Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper, and the Premier of Quebec, Philippe Couillard, received two Greek-Canadian publishers, George Guzmas and George Bakoyannis, on the occasion of the circulation of the 2000th issue of four of their newspapers.

The two Greeks began their careers as editors of newspaper “Parc Ex News” in 1993, covering the activities of the Greek-inhabited Park Extension neighborhood in English and French. By the end of 1993 they had proceeded with the issue of the newspaper “Chomedey News,” which in 2007 turned into “Laval News,” covering the news of Laval. During the same year, the two men proceeded to the publication of their third regional newspaper, “The North Shore News,” which covers the news of North Montreal.

However, Guzmas’ vision was to publish a Greek newspaper as a continuation of what of his father called “Greek Canadian Action” and ended when he died in 1982. So in 2007, the newspaper “Greek Canadian News” became a reality and it currently covers, in the Greek language, the activities of the Greek community in the wider Montreal area, while it also contains news from Greece.

In the honorary event for the circulation of 2000 issues, Greek Consul General in Montreal Nicolas Sigalas was also present, as well as Laval mayor Marc Demers, Senator Leo Housakos, numerous other state representatives and members of the Greek Diaspora.
