Greek Mayor of Thessaloniki Apologizes for Vandalism of Inukshuk Monument

Thessaloniki Mayor Yiannis Boutaris apologized for the vandalism of a Canadian monument at an event held at the Thessaloniki archeological museum in Northern Greece. The event marked the official launch of a major new exhibit on ancient Greece that will be coming to the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau next June.

Greece’s officials see the exhibition as a way of rehabilitating Greece’s battered image and drawing North American visitors to the cradle of Western civilization.

The mayor apologized to the Canadian ambassador to Greece, Robert Peck, for the vandalism of the Inukshuk monument at least four times this year. “Unfortunately, we have a lot of idiot citizens,” Boutaris said. “They destroy these monuments and we fix them”.

The monument sits in Canada Park, inaugurated in January to mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Canada and Greece.

The Canada Park, featuring the flags of Canada, Greece and Thessaloniki, has been rather damaged, as the new construction of a station for Thessaloniki’s new metro nearby dominates the area. The Inukshuk monument has been temporarily moved to the opposite side of the construction site and may later be relocated to the grounds of a museum for better protection.
