Torch Relay For Ottawa Marathon

8426376The Ottawa Marathon, which will take place this weekend, was inaugurated with a torch relay and the Olympic cauldron lighting ceremony. The flame arrived from Marathon, Athens, through the Mayor of Marathon Iordanis Louizos and the representative of National Athletics Federation (SEGAS) Evangelos Papapostolou.

The torch relay started May 23 from Marathon, Canada, which is located about 42 kilometers far from Ottawa, honoring the history of the Marathon race.

The Mayor of Marathon – Greece – Iordanis Louizos, referred to the importance of the flame, which “inspires our though and worms our hearts”, while the Ambassador of Greece, Eleftherios Angelopoulos, the inspirer of the project, stressed that “the flame of Marathon which arrived at the Canadian capital, symbolizes the timeless messages of the power of human will, of fair play, of international peace and freedom”.

More than 80 runners participated in the torch relay from the region of Marathon to the Ottawa city Hall, with the participation of famous personalities of the city, such as the Ottawa Police Chief Charles Bordeleau and many municipal councilors of the city.

The selection of runners was done after a relevant contest on the best modern representation of Pheidippides, a fact that heightened people’s interest for the lighting of the flame.

The events culminated at the City Hall with the lighting of the flame of Marathon and a speech from Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson, who stressed “his pride for the presence of the Light of Marathon, which will be burning in the altar of the city hall during the events of Ottawa Marathon” and expressed “his enthusiasm for the mass participation of citizens in the events of the Marathon.” Watson issued a proclamation which highlights the history and the symbolism of the Marathon race.

The Ottawa Marathon includes a series of events and competitions beginning, for the first time this year, with the Torch Relay and will culminate on May 26 with the classic Marathon race and the participation of about 45,000 people, making the Ottawa Marathon one of the most popular worldwide.
