Greektown in the Heart of Toronto

One of Toronto’s most vibrant and cosmopolitan neighborhoods, Greektown or Danforth is also one the city’s best known business improvement associations with over 400 members.

The Greek community in Danforth, in the heart of Toronto, caters for every taste, offering a wide array of restaurants, retail stores, services and cafes, all within easy walking distance.

In Danforth you will see Greek flags flying on the roads together with Canadian flags, signposts written in Greek, making you feel in Greece.

In the middle of Greektown there is a small, public space with all the elements of a traditional European square. It has retained traditional characteristics even after a couple of generations. You can find every basic service, comforts and resources. Walking in Danforth you will see the monument of Alexander the Great, a significant Greek historical figure, a backdrop with vines, a reminder of the grapevines of the Mediterranean, a fountain with running water on summer nights, a few patios where you can have a bite or refreshments.

Every year, in Alexander the Great Square, the Greek community hosts two national anniversary parades on October 28 and March 25, with Greek flags on the roads and seasonal flowers.

Danforth Bussinessmen’s Association plays an important role in Danforth’s life and activities, since it supports with donations two Greek retirement homes, the theater, the local hospital and the Smile of the Child organization in Greece. Among other donations, the association  funds ten weddings a year for non Greek couples who want to get married in Greece.
