Greek Orthodox Father Sues Schools Over Sex Education

Teaching religious affairs in a school often causes problems to teachers since students of different origin and religious belief have to be taught sex and marriage issues. As a result, many parents quite often disagree with what or the way the subject is being taught. At the same time, a group of conservative Christian and Muslim parents in Ontario have asked to be notified before their children are taught about sexuality, birth control and occult practices.

A Greek Orthodox father has sued the Hamilton school board for not having warned him when his children’s teachers plan to talk about family, marriage or human sexuality. According to the Huffington Post, Steve Tourloukis of Greek descent told reporters that he only wants his first-grade daughter and fourth-grade son to be taught such issues “from a Christian perspective.” School officials replied that parents can only request their children be excused from certain sex education lessons.

The Parental Rights in Education Defense Fund supported Tourloukis and is collecting money to help pay legal expenses for parents who sue school boards over their “unconstitutional suppression of religious freedom and conscience rights.”
