Greek-Canadian Niki Ashton Appointed Member of the Shadow Cabinet

Greek-Canadian Churchill MP Niki Ashton was elected to Chair the Status of Women committee of Parliament. It is one of five committees chaired by opposition members of NDP.

“I am very honored to have been elected as Chair and look forward to working with the committee in order to best bring forward the issues faced by women across Canada,” said Ashton regarding her election.

Ashton noted that the Status of Women committee deals with important issues affecting Northern and Aboriginal women as well as women across the country and the ongoing hard work to reach equality in Canada.

The youngest woman in the 40th Parliament, Niki is now the Chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on the Status of Women.

A former instructor with the University College of the North, she has an MA in International Affairs (Carleton University) and a BA in Global Political Economy (University of Manitoba). She is fluent in four languages, including Greek, and has studied others, as her personal website reveals (http://nikiashton.ndp.ca/home).

New Democratic Party leader Thomas Mulcair has appointed every candidate of his party that claimed his position in the recent elections for leadership in Shadow offices. Greek-Canadian Niki Ashton had also been a candidate. The fact that he elevated his opponents in key posts is said to have increased his popularity.

The official opposition Shadow cabinet also includes MP Peggy Nas as a Finance Critic, while Nathan Cullen was appointed New Opposition House Leader. Former interim leader Nycole Turmel retains her position as party whip. Mulcair will handle intergovernmental affairs and deputy leader Libby Davies will take on the health portfolio.

Quebec MP Francoise Boivin was promoted to justice critic. Two other New Democrats who withdrew from the leadership race were also named to the shadow cabinet. Robert Chisholm will deal with fisheries and be Mulcair’s deputy to watch over intergovernmental affairs and Romeo Saganash will deal with international development. Mulcair also named three deputy chiefs — Davies, David Christopherson and Megan Leslie.

Olivia Chow will be the party’s critic for transport, infrastructure and communities, and Jack Harris will oversee the defense file.
