Innovative Alzheimer’s Study Conducted by Dr. Papadopoulos & Research Institute of McGill University

Thanks to an innovative study, carried out by Dr. Vassilios Papadopoulos and the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), a new blood test will diagnose Alzheimer’s disease. The research, published in the month’s issue of the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, is based on the production of a brain hormone called dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), present at an early stage of the disease.

The test includes a chemical process called oxidation in small blood samples taken from non-Alzheimer’s patients, promoting the production of DHEA. It was proved that oxidation of blood in Alzheimer’s patients did not result in an increase of DHEA.

“Until now, there has been no definitive diagnostic tool for Alzheimer’s, other than postmortem analysis of brain tissue,” stated Dr. Vassilios Papadopoulos, with enthusiasm. This study was supported by funds from the National Institute of Health and Samaritan Pharmaceuticals, an entrepreneurial that holds the rights to market the blood test.
