2nd Greek Film Festival in Montreal

The 2nd Greek Film Festival in Montreal is being held under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Culture and Tourism.  The Festival was launched in “Cinema Du Parc”. The first screened film was “El Greco” by Yannis Smaragdis, which earned the praise of the audience.
Helen Fotopoulos who is a member of the City of Montreal Executive Committee introduced the festival.  She opened with statments regarding an entire week dedicated to modern Greek cinema in a city of many festivals.
The Consul of Greece in Montreal Thanos Kafopoulos, noted that the Greek Film Festival must become an institution in the city of many cultures.
Yannis Smaragdis’ film “El Greco” was introduced by the Consul of Spain in Montreal Javier Dago Elorza.  He stressed that El Greco is a treasure to Spain as he elevated religious art to a world-level avant-garde art due to his passion and pain. The Spanish Consul General said that many common experiences unite Greece and Spain.
Yesterday evening also attracted audiences who visited the 2nd Greek Festival to attend an evening dedicated to poet Constantine Cavafy, under the auspices of the Modern Greek Studies Department of McGill University.
The first film screened was directed by Stellios Charalambopoulos titled “The Night Fernando Pessoa Met Constantine Cavafy”.
The Professor of the Modern Greek Studies Department of McGill University, Nikos Poulopoulos responded to questions from the audience.  He stated that the two poets never actually met, according to historical data.
The evening was concluded with the screening of a biographical film titled “Cafavy” by Yannis Smaragdis.
