Another Greek-Canadian Festival

The Hellenic Dancers of Sudbury performed at the Greek Festival at the Hellenic Centre on Ester Road in Sudbury on Friday evening.  The Greek Festival is scheduled from this Friday to Sunday. The event features Greek cuisine, music, dancing and children’s games.

Greater Sudbury’s Greek community has already begun another year of festivities. “We welcome everybody to experience the warmth of the Greek hospitality,” said organizer George Malis. Malis did not know how to begin describing everything the festival offers, he said. There is specialty Greek food, including pastries and Greek traditional dancing by GOYA (Greek Orthodox Youth Association). A live bouzouki band from Toronto will be preforming throughout the festivities. The patio is open rain or shine. “The foremost objective of the festival is to engage the community in the rich Greek culture”, stated Malis.
He said he hopes to maintain the festival’s quality from previous years. “It’s the 18th, so we just want to repeat the success,” said Malis.

Funds raised go to sustaining the Greek Orthodox Church, but the Greek community will also reach out to the community, said Malis. Last year it donated money for a bed at Sudbury Regional Hospital and this year it raised money for relief efforts in Haiti.
