With the initiative of Greek-Canadian federal member of Parliament, John Cannis who belongs to the Liberals, the Canadian Parliament reached a consensus with which asks the Canadian government to support the international campaign so that the theological school of Halki can be re-operate.
John Cannis, introducing the resolution said: “The Parliament supports the reoperation of Halki Theological School and acknowledges the Institute as important part of the orthodox faith and the international civilization.”
John Cannis, who persuaded his fellow-members of the Canadian Parliament to reach a consensus, also explained: “The international public opinion has to condemn the closure of Halki Theological School and consider it as a blatant infringement of the basic principle of religious liberty. I believe that it is time for Turkey to solve this issue, to stop the infringement of human and religious liberties in Turkey and give the permission to the re-operation of the School. The resolution approved by the Canadian Parliament the 15th of June.
Giving an interview, John Cannis said: “This resolution aims at the re-operation of Halki Theological School. The Canadian Parliament also asks the Turkish Government to do the right thing, to respect the human and religious rights of all the orthodox Christians throughout the world. ”
