The Olympic Flame began its long journey to Vancouver, Canada, host city of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, after the handover ceremony at the Panathenian Stadium in Athens on Thursday night, which was attended by President of the Republic Karolos Papoulias and visiting Governor General of Canada Michaelle Jean.
The Flame reached Athens after travelling throughout Greece following the Flame Lighting Ceremony a week earlier at the foot of Kronios Hill in ancient Olympia, venue of the ancient Olympics, arriving by torch relay at the Panathenian Stadium, the venue of the first Modern Olympics, where it was then turned over to the “Vancouver 2010” Organising Committee for the next leg of the journey.
