Canadian authorities have issued a tsunami threat warning for parts of the British Colombia coast after an 7.9-magnitude earthquake hit the Gulf of Alaska early on Monday morning.

Earthquakes Canada, part of the government’s Natural Resources section, said waves from the earthquake site were projected to hit Vancouver Island at 4.40 a.m. local time (1240GMT).

Victoria, the BC provincial capital, warned residents on the coast to move two blocks inland.

However, the warning does not cover the Metro Vancouver area or the Sunshine Coast.
