Canadian newspaper Ottawa Citizen published an extensive article on April 25, on the Greek regions of Mani and Monemvasia, noting that “Greece is more than islands.”
The article pays tribute to the wild scenery and the beauty of Mani, Peloponnese. “I particularly love the Mani Peninsula – the southern tip of Peloponnese — empty and wild like a landscape in a Hollywood western,” wrote Rick Steves for Ottawa Citizen. “Once struggling with pirates and brigands, today the Mani is a peaceful land of rustic villages and untrammeled beaches. Many Mani towns feature sumptuous, old, fresco-slathered churches — pockets of brightness in this otherwise parched land.”
Furthermore, the journalist also refers to the beach town of Kardamyli, the perfect place to get a drink. It is a relatively relaxed summer resort, where the people have prohibited any new construction over a certain height, in order to preserve the beauty of the area.
Rick Steves also wrote about Monemvasia, another Peloponnesian town, known for its picturesque scenery. “Another Peloponnesian retreat is Monemvasia – a Gibraltar-like peninsula with million-dollar views. Tucked along the southeast coast, this gigantic rock juts up improbably from the blue-green deep, just a few hundred yards offshore.”
The article also makes special reference to Monemvasia’s Byzantine fortress which was considered “the mightiest” fortress of its era. “Today, its scant ruins sprawl evocatively across the broad summit,” noted Steves.
