The Greeks of Danforth Avenue in Toronto are preparing for the 21st “Taste of the Danforth” Festival, the largest street festival in Canada which will be held August 8-10.
During the festival, visitors will have the chance to take part in tastings and enjoy themselves with Greek traditional dances. Taste of the Danforth not only promotes Greek food and traditional products, but also Greek culture.
The festival follows the example of the successful US festival, “Taste of Chicago.” Its aim used to be promoting Greek cuisine and culture in Toronto, but it soon became a multicultural event.
“Taste of the Danforth” started in 1994 in order to promote businesses which were operating on Danforth Avenue. In the beginning it only had 5,000 visitors, but today more than 1.5 million people attend the event. The festival is managed by a dedicated organization consisting mainly of Greek businessmen, called Danforth BIA, which raises money for hospitals in Toronto.
In 2013, the festival attendees were able to unofficially break the Guinness World Record for the largest Zorba dance, with more than 5,000 dancers.
“Taste of the Danforth” has supported the region and according to an independent study, its turnover rose from 11.4 million dollars in 2010 to 64.7 million dollars in 2013.
This year, Greek-Canadian chefs will showcase Greek cuisine, along with famous Greek chef Andreas Lagos, who will be presenting some of his recipes.
