Thousands of Visitors at Sudbury Greek Festival

greek-festivalThe annual Sudbury Greek Festival, which was carried out for the 22nd consecutive year, once again attracted thousands of Greek and Canadian Visitors.

The festival was founded by Sudbury’s Greek community, which was formed in the late 1800s but began to really grow in the 1950s.

It is estimated that this year’s events, held from July 25 to July 27, attracted about 4,000 people. The Sudbury Greek Festival is considered Ontario’s largest north of Toronto.

Visitors had the opportunity to get to know the rich Greek culture. On Saturday, there were five dance performances, including a children’s dance and a performance by the Sudbury Hellenic Dancers. Apart from the traditional dances, visitors also enjoyed delicious Greek dishes such as souvlaki, spanakopita and baklava.

They could also purchase a variety of souvenirs from Greece at a special gift shop that was set up just for the festival.

The shop included jewelry, Greek flags and cookbooks with traditional Greek recipes. Proceeds from the festival will be used to support the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church by covering operational expenses.

“The festival is important to a lot of people because it’s part of our identity. For that to continue, we feel that expressing our culture to our friends and family through events like the Greek festival is a good thing and it’s a benefit,” said event organizer Sophia Moutsatsos.
