Canada Honors Departing Greek Diplomats

70 anCanada’s Greek community held a ceremony to bid farewell to the motherland’s departing diplomats at the end of their tenures in Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal.

Greece’s Ambassador to Canada, Eleftherios Anghelopoulos, and its Consuls General for Toronto and Montreal, Dimitris Azemopoulos and Thanos Kafopoulos, respectively were the main honorees of the night. Meanwhile, the Consul General of Cyprus in Canada, Iakovos Kirakosian was also honored ahead of his departure.

The event was organized by the His Eminence Metropolitan Sotirios of Toronto and all of Canada, who emphasized the character and dynamism of the Greek ambassador during the economic crisis, stressing that he showed real wisdom in his work.

For his part, Anghelopoulos referred to the strong bonds between Greece and Canada and stressed that the future of Hellenism depends on the countries’ shared vision and unity.

The ceremony was followed by a documentary showing which referred to the exhibition “The Greeks: From Agamemnon to Alexander the Great,” which will be presented next fall in two museums in Canada and another two in the USA.

The event was attended by important people of the Greek community in Canada, including Senator Panagiota Merchant, Judge Ria Tzimas and the president of the Greek Community of Toronto, Andonis Artemakis.
