According to statements that speak of an emergency meeting on June 15, the board is in a “difficult position” and would require members’ “authorization for the sale of one of the churches of GCT”.
The idea of selling a church has caused panic. But lawyer George Bougadis said the charity is considering selling three neighboring houses and not any church, and that the statement was false. This was re-announced on Wednesday evening at a meeting that took place in the packed Cathedral of the Annunciation in Parkdale.
But some believers have already reacted. “It’s a community, it is the relationships that develop between people,” said 24-year Leah Rakopoulos, who was baptized in the cathedral, where her parents also got married, and her grandmother started visiting just after her immigration from Greece.
