Ottawa Marathon May 2013

images12A Marathon Race will be taking place in Ottawa this year, as the highlight of the annual races. The marathon’s organization is under the initiative of the Greek Ambassador in Otawwa, Eleftherios Aggelopoulos.

The Tamarack Ottawa Race will be held on May 25-26, with the participation of the Marathon municipality, the Hellenic Association of Amateur Athletics (SEGAS), and the Regional Municipality of Ottawa, under the auspices of the Greek Embassy. There will be parallel events, with the climaxing in the Marathon race on the last day.

For the first time this year, after the Greek ambassador’s proposition, there will be The Ottawa Marathon Torch Relay. The official Marathon Flame, which is lit every year before the Athens Classic Marathon, will be coming to Ottawa for the 2013 Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend. To celebrate the presence of this symbol of the marathon movement and of the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) in the Ottawa Marathon, the first ever Ottawa Marathon Torch Relay will be held.

The Torch Relay is a 42km event that will see over 80 participants carry the torch from the town of Marathon (near Carp) to Ottawa City Hall on May 23. Jim Watson, Mayor of Ottawa, will then light a ceremonial cauldron signaling the beginning of Race Weekend. The cauldron will burn until the end of Race Weekend on Sunday, according to the official website.
