His Eminence Metropolitan Archbishop Sotirios (Athanassoulas) of Toronto, Exarch of All Canada sent a message to the Greek diaspora of Canada to show their support to Greece and its people during his speech at the official dinner of different charity organizations honoring the work of the Toronto Orthodox Theological Academy.
The primate of the Greek Orthodox Church of Canada noted that the Greek diaspora is called upon to help and support its brothers and sisters back home, who are facing such harsh financial times. His Eminence also asked the organized Greek community to contribute to the paying off of Greece’s debt. Sotirios also asked the Greek-Canadian parish to support the Hellenic Community of Greater Montreal by becoming members and voting on the general elections about burning issues that may arise.
President of the Hellenic Community of Greater Montreal Nikolas Pagonis underlined on his part that the Metropolitan’s work is of great importance to the Greek ex-pats of Canada and that the Theological Academy must be reinforced to continue its work concerning the education of the future Greek Orthodox priests for the respective churches of Canada.
The dinner was also attended by the Consul General of Montreal Thanos Kafopoulos, Mayor of Laval Gilles Vaillancourt, President of the National Philoptochos Society Efthymia Koutsougera, municipal councilors Mary Deros (Municipality of Montreal) and Vassilis Aggelopoulos (Municipality of Laval), President of AHEPA Canada George Vassilas and several priests and members of the Greek Canadian community.
AHEPA Canada announced the launch of a $6,000 scholarship for one student to attend the Toronto Orthodox Theological Academy.
