New Greek National Party Puts Montreal Community on Edge

The presence of a new Montreal chapter of a right-wing nationalist Greek party is polarizing members of Montreal’s Greek community.
Golden Dawn won 18 seats in Greece’s recent election.
“We are Greek nationalists,” said Golden Dawn’s deputy leader in Montreal, Spiros Macrozonaris. “We love our country. We are not fascists. We are not anti-immigrants. We are not neo-Nazis. We are Greeks, and we love our country. That’s all.”

But some members of Montreal’s Greek community say Macriozonaris’ words don’t allay their concerns. They point to the group’s logo, which bears a resemblance to the Nazi swastika, and to the party’s salute, which is similar to the Hitler army’s infamous arm gesture.
Louis Hondronicolas, a member of Golden Dawn, said the concerns are misplaced.
“Maybe you’ve seen pictures, and there are a lot of them being photoshopped – although… that salute is an ancient salute, and it was used by [Ioannis] Metaxas when he fought the Nazi,” said Hondronicolas. “Our party has nothing to do with Nazis or neo-Nazis.”

When CBC News asked members of the local Greek community how they felt about the party, many of them said although they don’t condone Golden Dawn’s violent actions, they understand the sentiment that there are too many illegal immigrants in their homeland.
A woman said “I feel very bad because we had enough problems witht he fascists when they invaded Greece in 1941 with Hitler and Mussolini. I don’t want to see another Hitler in Mussolini in my country because now it’s not the Germans or the Italians, they are the Greeks.”

Steven Slimovitch, spokesperson for the B’nai Brith Canada, which advocates against racism and anti-Semitism, said he wants the city’s Hellenic community to take a stand.
“We trust the Hellenic community will come forward and do much like the Greek government has done and say that Golden Dawn party is not welcome, that they’re a racist party, and they espouse racist views,” said Slimovitch.
He added that groups that spew hate against other groups have no place on Canadian soil.
Golden Dawn made international headlines in June when a spokesman for the party slapped a member of the opposition in the face on live television.
Ken Matziorinis, an economics professor at McGill University, said the party’s popularity has picked up in the last two years because of the country’s precarious financial situation.
He said that situation is similar to the socio-economic turmoil faced in Germany in the 1920s, which led to the rise of fascism and Nazism.

Is Slimovich on record as denouncing the recent roundup of African migrants in Israel ?

Of course Golden Dawn is fascist. Fascism is a valuable political idea: it means “strength through unity.” Most fascists are good people.

A nation that is growing fascist is a nation whose people are coming together on the basis of their shared blood, not allowing the temptations of money divide them anymore. Certain powerful interests don’t want this to happen. Bankers. Corporate bosses. Stockholders. Anyone who is either an exploiter or a traitor with respect to the people they have been harming. No predator approves of his prey escaping from his claws, and that’s what happens when people throw off the Money Power in favor of the racial comity that nationalism brings.

Golden Dawn has no need to apologize for being fascist. I certainly would not, if I were running a racial nationalist group. The first thing I’d recognize is the importance of denying my political enemies the evocative weight of their loaded language. If they call me a racist, I admit it, and I explain why being a racist is a GOOD thing, a SENSIBLE thing, and a MORAL thing.

That’s a good point curri. The Jews who are all for multiculturalism and the immigration of foreign races into white countries are the very same Jews who endorse Jewish nationalism in Israel. While Baruch Goldstein was in Brooklyn, NY, he’d probably have supported multiculturalism in America. But the moment he moves to Israel, he picks up an automatic rifle and massacres a bunch of Arabs in a mosque for the “sin” of being in Israel.

I guess it’s true, then, that the “white power” types tend to be the dregs, the worst examples of the white race.

Not to excuse Golden Dawn but they are essentially no different than any crypo-Kach supporters in Israel’s Knesset.

The response to B’nai Brith Canada by Greeks shouldn’t be to support GD party but to also ask themselves why hasn’t B’nai Britht “taken a stand” against Israel-for-the-jews anti-immigrant stances in Israel?  (or Jewish groups that exclusively give money /support to Jews much like GD only give to Greeks).

The lack of moral consistency from B’nai Brith is hardly morally credibly and stinks of racism towards Greeks. Where is their voices of objection when it comes to Israeli’s policies that mimic them?

Well, if Spiros Macrozonaris has a desire to be a Nationalistic Greek fascist then he should pack his bags and head back to Greece – proclaiming to be a Greek nationalist while living in another nation shows both his lack of commitment to Greece and his cowardice. Regardless, we have no need for that nonsense in Canada – hopefully most Greek citizens don’t either.

How appalling to see a nation with such a proud history allow slime like the members of Golden Dawn find purchase in their country. The world has no need for the hate fuelled by another radical and ignorant group of scape boaters. Finally a pox on the EU for getting everything wrong, and the Greek government for perpetuating such a corrupt system for so long.

Hellenes can be nationalists everywhere in the western world.
