On September 4, residents of Quebec will choose among many candidates – including Greek-Canadians – in the Quebec Provincial Election. In the Laurier-Dorion province, Gerry Sklavounos, of Greek origin, is seeking to be re-elected. Sklavounos is a member of the Quebec Liberal Party. Another Greek candidate from the Liberal Party, Eleni Bakopanos, is also a candidate in the electoral district of Cremazie.
The recently-founded Coalition Avenir Québec (or CAQ) is a party in Quebec. Its policy has been described in the press as center-right. Two of its candidates are of Greek descent as well, George Manolikakis running in the Saint-Laurent province while Denise Leftakis is in the Châteauguay area.
Among the 20 parties participating, only three appear to be the most powerful; the currently governing Liberals, the Québécois party and the CAQ. The parties with Greek-Canadian candidates are hoping they will lure the Greek community and give a boost to their prospects.
