Greek Community Hosts Event “Macedonia:The Historical Truth”

The Greek Community of Montreal in cooperation with the Greek Congress of Quebec, the Macedonian Association “Alexander the Great”, the union “Vogatsiaton Kastorias” and the Pontian Association of Montreal “Efxinos Pontos” hosted an event yesterday under the title “Macedonia: The Historical Truth”.

The event aimed at presenting archaeological, historical, and geographical evidence that Macedonia of Alexander the Great is Greek.

The featured speeches were delivered in English, since the organizers are trying to inform the broader society of Quebec on the issue, inviting provincial and federal politicians as well as all level students to attend the events. One of the main speakers of the event was Dr. Chris Karatzios, recognized among community members for his deep knowledge of Greek national issues, and other prominent scholars of the subject.

This is pure Greek Propaganda. The fact that you need to host these events shows that you are doing everything possible to brainwash the community into thinking Macedonia is greek. Macedonia never was and never will be part of Greece. The treaty of Bucherest gave a bit of Macedonian land to Greece in 1914. Don’t try claim a great nation with great history as your own. Macedonia is Macedonia. Greece is Greece. Seperate entities. What you are doing is like the UK claiming all Indian history. Be worried about your economy not stealing history

Greece is a modern state which comprises of most ancient Greek kingdoms with Macedonia being One.

I advise you attend the event to be better informed prior to making any statement based upon communist Yugoslavian propaganda. At present a major percentage of the global academic community agree on Macedonia being a Greek/proto-Greek culture.

The propagandists of FYROM simply ignore the fact that Nobody has invaded Macedonia in 1913 but instead during the first Balkan war, the Balkan coalition between Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece and Montenegro INVADED OTTOMAN EMPIRE, for the liberation of the Bulgarians, Greek and Serbs who lived there. The movement for independent Macedonia, which started far earlier…..
2 – earlier (at the end of the 19th century) had an UNDISPUTED BULGARIAN CHARACTER and this fact is described by any contemporary (of the time) observer, historian, diplomat, nomatter what the skopjan propagandists claim. There is no need to rewrite history – its well described in so many books. There are many examples of 1 nation living in 2 different states…..  3 – Furthermore, Macedonia had a rather mixed population at that time because of which the idea for independent Macedonia was more attractive for the local population than the idea for union with Bulgaria. The fact that the uprising in 1903 was a Bulgarian one and the fact that IMRO was an organization founded by BULGARIANS are descibed in all books (from that time and even in all books pre-1945)….

Modern Slavs, both Bulgarians and Macedonians, CANNOT establish a link with antiquity, as the Slavs entered the Balkans centuries after the demise of the ancient Macedonian kingdom. Only the most radical Slavic factions—mostly émi-grés in the United States, Canada, and Australia—even attempt to establish a connection to antiquity. Eugene Borza, Historian, Professor, and Archeologist, whom the American Philological Association refers to as the “Macedonian specialist”

I’m afraid you cannot handle the truth. Here is what pro-Greek historian NLG Hammond has to say about the Macedonians:
“We have already inferred from the incident at the Olympic Games c.500 that the Macedonians themselves, as opposed to their kings, were considered not to be Greeks. Herodotus said this clearly in four words, introducing Amyntas, who was king c.500, as ‘a Greek ruling over Macedonians’ (5.20. 4), and Thucydides described the Macedonians and other northern tribes as ‘barbarians’ in the sense of ‘non-Greeks’, despite the fact that they were Greek-speaking. (Thuc. 2. 80. 5-7; 2. 81. 6; 4. 124.1) When it comes to political controversy, it was naturally good invective to call the king a barbarian too. Thus a Greek speech-writer called the Thessalians ‘Greeks’ and Archelaus, the contemporary Macedonian king, ‘a barbarian’. Demosthenes spoke of Philip II as ‘the barbarian from Pella’. Writing in 346 and eager to win Philip’s approval, Isocrates paid tribute to Philip as a blue-blooded Greek and made it clear at the same time that Macedonians were not Greeks. (Isoc. 5. 108 and 154) Aristotle, born at Stageira on the Macedonian border and the son of a Greek doctor at the Macedonian court, classed the Macedonians and their institutions of Monarchy as not Greek, as we shall see shortly. It is thus not surprising that the Macedonians considered themselves to be, and were treated by Alexander the Great as being, separate from the Greeks. They were proud to be so.”

  • Christavica

Denying ethnic identity will get you nowhere, ladies and gentlemen. The reality is that there is a nation called Macedonians, and they are not Greek. Why do the neo-Greeks feel so threatened by that simple fact? If you are from Pontus, why not be proud of that? If you grandparents spoke Turkish, and were given a stolen Macedonian house for free, so what?

Fact: only the Greek diaspora holds events to denigrate the culture of others. It’s sick and it is pitiful. Greeks should celebrate being Greeks, whatever that means. If they want to know what it means to be Macedonian, they should ask, we will tell you. We are all adults here, there is no point in keeping old fears and hatreds alive.

    ‘The
town of Monastir, capital of the vilayet of Monsastir, lies just
about half way between Bulgarian and Greek territory. North, the
majority of Macedonians are Bulgar, south the majority are Hellenes.
The villages meet, cross, and mix in the Monastir vilayet. The
reason, therefore, we hear so much about disturbances at Monastir is
not because the Turks there are more wicked than Turks
    elsewhere,
but because there is a persistent feud between Greek and Bulgarian
    political religionists. Monastir
is an undistinguished, motley sort of
    town
of some 60,000 nhabitants, 14,000 of them Greek, 10,000 of them
Bulgarian, four or five thousand Albanian, two or three thousand Jew,
    and the rest Turk.”

    400 world famous historians writes:

“The answers are clear:  Alexander the Great was Greek, not Slavic, and Slavs and their language were nowhere near Alexander or his homeland until 1000 years later.  This brings us back to the geographic area known in antiquity as Paionia.  Why would the people who live there now call themselves Macedonians and their land Macedonia? “” the government in Skopje to understand that it cannot build a national identity at the expense of historic truth.  Our common international society cannot survive when history is ignored, much less when history is fabricated.”

It seems that modern Greeks worry too much about who modern Macedonian ancestors were. Instead I’d worry who my ancestors were if I was a Greek. Modern Greek ancestors were not the ancient Greeks but Albanians, Turks, Vlachs, Romas, Macedonians, Bulgarians and who knows what else. Wake up, guys! Just ask your grandparents what language they spoke at home and that’s what you are.

  • James Bond

All this! is nothing more than modern greek propaganda!

  • Loni

Since you have no proof of any “Macedonian” identity (since all you ancestors like Tsar Samuil where Bulgarians) your last resort is to take “punch” at the Greeks. But unfortunate for you is that the Greeks and their language can be tracked through each time period, compare to you that can just track your roots to Bulgarians like Tsar Samuil , Saint Naum , Milidanov brothers ( of course all of them falsified to “ethnik Macedonians” just in Fyrom. Instead of spreading hatred towards the Greeks you should solve you self made identity problems

To all those pseudo Macedonians who have been brainwashed by their government and interest groups.

Please realise who you really are.

    You are not Macedonians.

Please choose a name that identifies who you are as a people.

Not steal one from the Greeks, just because it has a proud and strong history and you want to make it yours for the purpose of creating tourism to make money from. And to one day make a move to invade the Greek Macedonians so you can have access to the Aegean Sea and to Thessaloniki so you can take our homes, our beautiful beaches, hotels and others things such as our mineral and gold mining in Makedonia.

I have seen your intimadating map of your desires to take Makedonia from us Greeks.

You have offended and are stealing from us what belongs to us in pride, soul and identity.

    Who am I?

    I am a Makedono. A Macedonian Greek

My grandparents spoke Greek in their villages in the mountains of Macedonia and of course  spoke some Turkish as they lived under the Ottoman Turkish Empire.

And might i tell you i can tell an Albanian a mile away from us Greeks they look mor like you Skopjians in a way. Have you ever noticed how the FYROM prime minister Mr Gruevski has asiatic looking eyes, it is because he has some Turkish Mongol blood in him.

    Now for the name “Alexander”

A Greek name that means helper of men.

Phillip, a Greek name that means lover of horses.

I don’t see any “ski’s” or “nov” on the end of these names.

So stop being idiots and get yourselves a name. If you can’t i have some for you to choose.

ALBURIA (from Albania and Bulgaria) which makes up your ethnic background.

WANABIA (because you want to be something that you are not).

    SKUPIA

    or perhaps KLEFTIA

    or simply VARDARSKA.

Leave my home alone, i am not seeking yours.

Yes there is a State in Greece called Macedonia, just like there is a State in Greece called Peloponisos.

And Macedonia is a part of the Greek nation and it has not become an independent state or seceeded from Greece.

    Dear Readers,

No where in history has a group conquered a nation and just imposed their langauage, beliefs, and laws. Not even when the British conquered Quebec did they force, or could force, the whole population to learn english as their main language. Yes, it was the language of business, but until the “Quiet Revolution” many French people outside of Montreal spoke french exclusively. The only time the British made a conquered area “english” was when they vanquished, remember Machiavelli’s “dispose and disposes” theory, when they sent the Acadians by the thousands to the now New Orleans area in order to fully, and properly conquer the French colonists. The same goes in Macedonia. Even if the kings were Greek, and the rest of the nation was non-Greek. The kings would have to learn the langauge of the locals, and follow their customs. An example of this were the Thracians that “adopted” Greek culture, but spoke a language entirely their own. Only through colonization by Athens, and Macedonia, were the Thracians “integrated” into the Greek culture. There are other cases as well in Asia Minor. Moreover, the Macedonians, like the Spartans, had their own “unique” culture compared to the “Ionian” Greeks, that were from the Athenian stock, or the “Aeolians”. The Spartans and the Macedonians were distant cousins as they both “invaded” Greece around the same time, and were known as “Dorians”. Remember that Greece, was not always inhabited by Greeks (that is in Herodotus as well, or JB Bury’s book titled “History of Greece”).

Remember that Herodotus was writing a book to propogate the Athenian “myth” of being the most civilised of the Greeks. It was a propoganda text at best. The facts are these”

    1) If the Macedoians were not Greek, they definitely were not Slavs;
    2) Philip, Alexander, and the other kings, especially Alexander, pushed the Greek culture throughout their conquered areas, not their ancient pseudo-culture.
    3) Aristotle spoke no other language than Ionian Greek, which means he would have had to learn a barbaric langauge that he wouldn’t fathom based on his writings.

In short, learn your history because it is better to be considered a fool, than to open your mouth and to confirm it.

Its obviosu you skopians are the ones’s that can’t handle the truth..

    A. Even Hammond who is among the few tthat argues ancient Macedonians weren’t Greeks (despite that they self-identified as macedonians  Hellenes), does not deny ancient Macedonians became indistinguishable from the rest of the greek population over the course of hellenistic period.

    b. Hammond said you Skopians have nothing to do with ancient Macedonians (that part you left out)

    “I suggested to
Patrick Leigh Fermor to suggest in his article in the Independent the name of
“Paeonia” as the most suitable for Skopje . [...]“Therefore, given the
struggle of the three ethnic groups (Serbs, Greeks, Bulgarians) for the control
of Macedonia and the absence of any local national movement, we can talk of
Macedonia only as a geographical entity not as a nation.” – Ancient
Macedonian historian Nicholas Hammond in an interview with the magazine
    “Macedonian Echo” in February, 1999)

Pure nonsense.  Ancient Macedonians self-identified as Hellenes… and were recognzed as Hellenes by other Greeks…. for CENTURES during pan-Hellenic sporting events (which at the time were reserved for Greeks)

  • Anonymous

The reality there is a nation of brainwashed former self-identifying ethnic Bulgarians… and we agree they are not Greek… therefore not Macedonian.

Our grandparents spoke Greek.. as yours spoke BUlgarian until Yugoslav communists modified and renamed your language “Macedonian”.

I agree there is no point in keeping old fears and hatred allies. You should stop hating Greeks and find your own identity rather than ethnically harass your neighbours for theirs.

I’m afraid you need to dig deeper into your own ethnic Bulgarian past before lecturing your neighbours on history.

    “Prior to the
creation of a Macedonian republic in 1944,most Macedonian immigrants viewed
themselves as ethnically Bulgarian and often referred to themselves as
Macedonian-Bulgarians or simply Bulgarians. While immigration records failed
to list Macedonians as separate category, approximately three-quarters of
those listed as Bulgarians were‍ from the regions of Kostur and Bitola in
    Macedonia.”  – James R. Grossman,
    University of Chicago

    “The history of
the construction of a Macedonian national identity does not begin with
Alexander the Great in the fourth century B.C. or with Saints Cyril and
Methodius in the ninth century A.D. as Macedonian nationalist historians often
    claim”

    “Krste
Misirkov, who had clearly developed a strong sense of his own personal national
identity as a Macedonian and who outspokenly and unambiguously called for
Macedonian linguistic and national separatism, acknowledged that a Macedonian
national identity was a relatively recent historical development.”

    “The political
and military leaders of the Slavs of Macedonia at the turn of the century seem
    not to have heard Misirkov’s call for a separate Macedonian national identity;
they continued to identify themselves in a national sense as Bulgarians rather
than Macedonians.” – US Anthropologist Loring Danforth, “The
Macedonian Conflict: Ethnic Nationalism in a Transnational World”,
    Princeton Univ Press, December 1995
