Toronto Holds Event in Honor of Greek Sea Bass & Sea Bream

The Consulate General of Greece Dimitris Azemopoulos, the Trade Commissioner  Christos Gribas, and the Federation of Greek Mariculture hosted a unique event at Toronto’s swanky Palais Royale Ballroom on Friday, October 1st, 2010. The event was intended to boost the appreciation and awareness of the Greek Sea bass and sea bream.
The fish were shipped in from Greece specifically for the event, and indeed are flown in from Greece several times a week.  The seafood was featured over a delicious three course meal.
The Sea Bass (Lavraki in Greek) is the most popular Mediterranean fish in North America.  In ancient Greece the fish was considered ‘the smartest of all fish’ as it was the most difficult to catch.  In modern Greece it is so rare to catch one that there is an expression: “I caught a Sea Bass” (épyasa Lavráki) which means “I hit the jackpot.”
The popular Sea Bream (Tsipoura in Greek) was also featured. This fish is the most popular Mediterranean fish in Europe. In ancient Greece it was also referred to as the “Dorade” and was devoted to Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty.  It was considered to be the most attractive and tastiest fish.
With Greek food prominantly dominating many areas of the food industry; from restaurants, catering, grocery, and importing/exporting, the reception brought together a unique collection of seafood lovers.
All were pleasantly surprised to learn that despite being farmed in the clean and sparkling seas of the Greece, they still maintained their wild flavour.
