BB Founder Lazaridis Announces New PlayBook

A new high technology tablet computer was presented by the Canadian company Research In Motion (RIM) who is manufactured by Blackberry.  It was founded and run by Greek Canadian Mike Lazaridis.

The Blackberry PlayBook which weighs 400 grams, throws down the gauntlet on Apple’s iPad and hopes to establish Blackberry to the expanding market of a new category of computers that combine the features of netbooks, smartphones and e-readers.
According to Reuters, AFP and the BBC, PlayBook has among others, a dinuclear 1 Ghz processor with the new operating system QNX, 7-inch touch screen,2 high resolution cameras to allow video conferences, wireless Wi-Fi and Bluetooth (but must be connected via a Blackberry mobile phone into a mobile network to be 3G capable) and supports Flash technology to Adobe, unlike the iPad).

The new “tablet”, which is mostly for professional use, unlike the iPad which is addressed to the general public should be available in the beginning of 2011. In the meantime it is expected that similar products will appear on the market by other companies such as Hewlett-Packard, Toshiba, Lenovo, Asus, HTC, Acer, Cisco, etc.  Samsung already released the Galaxy tablet and Dell the Streak with a 5-inch screen.

Analysts estimate that worldwide sales of tablet computers will reach 40%; meaning 50 million devices in 2011.

Lazaridis didn’t announce the price of PlayBook at relevant press conference. The price is expected will play a key role in new product acceptance. According to research firm ComScore, the RIM dominates the market for “smart” cell phones with a market share close to 40%.
