Taste of GreekTown

Toronto’s Taste of the Danforth, sponsored by Pilaros, is an annual event that signals the high point of every summer and this year proved no exception. Held from August 6-8, the street festival saw the shutting down of Danforth Avenue from Broadview to Jones, an area long dubbed GreekTown. In its 17th year, the festival is estimated to attract in the region 1.2 million visitors over a three day span.
Boasting an atmosphere that is family friendly, multicultural and free of admission costs, the festival has again played to its main strength: food. Focussing on the Greek cuisine the area has become famous the festival added delicacies from around the world, often with a fusion and Greek twist. However, the mainstays remained the souvlaki, gyro, loukoumades and spanakopita dishes that bring the crowds in record numbers.
Multiculturalism was also the focus of the entertainment, with a myriad of performers from around the world gracing the many stages along the Danforth strip. From flamenco to Broadway, traditional bouzouki to electric guitar, belly dancing to jazz, all the musical bases were covered. There were even sports and fun zones for the kids to enjoy and pass the time.
As is always the case, the world’s third largest Greek community managed to yet again to pull of a world class event, while maintaining its uniquely Greek identity. The countdown begins to next year!
